Improve Canoeing (Level 4)

Improve Canoeing Course (Level 4)

Build confidence and go further in a canoe

Our Improve Canoeing course is designed for paddlers who have already had a first taste of canoeing and are ready to move on. It is the ideal next step for anyone who wants to improve their paddling skills, handle a canoe with more confidence, and enjoy longer journeys on the water.

Based at Southampton Water Activities Centre (SWAC), this course helps you progress from simply getting afloat to becoming a more capable and independent canoe paddler. Whether your aim is family adventures, leisurely journeys, club paddling or broadening your paddlesport skills, Explore Canoeing gives you the knowledge and practical experience to move forward.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for:

  • paddlers who have already tried canoeing and want to improve. Ideally you would already hold
  • adults and older teenagers looking to build confidence in open canoes
  • paddlers who want to develop better boat control and journeying skills
  • anyone planning to canoe on sheltered water with more independence

It is a natural follow-on from the Paddlesports Safety & Rescue Course for paddlers who have chosen to specialise in canoeing

What will you learn?

During the course, you will develop the practical skills and decision-making needed to paddle a canoe more effectively and safely. Topics typically include:

  • improved forward paddling
  • turning and manoeuvring
  • controlling the canoe in a straight line
  • working efficiently with a partner in a tandem canoe
  • basic trim and balance
  • launching and landing
  • steering techniques
  • simple rescue awareness
  • journey skills and planning
  • understanding wind, weather and water conditions
  • choosing suitable clothing and equipment

The emphasis is on becoming a more rounded paddler, not just learning isolated strokes.

Learn in a real outdoor environment

At SWAC we are fortunate to have access to a varied and interesting paddling environment. This makes the course much more than just drills in a straight line. You will learn in a practical setting, developing real skills that can be taken away and used on future paddles.

Our instructors will help you improve at a pace that suits you, with plenty of coaching, demonstrations and time on the water.

Course format

The Explore Canoeing course is usually run over 2 days or 4 evenings, with plenty of time afloat. The exact format varies depending on the group, weather and programme, but the focus is always on enjoyable learning, skill development and confidence building.

Equipment and clothing

We can provide the specialist canoeing equipment required for the course, including the canoe, paddle and buoyancy aid. You should bring suitable clothing for the weather, footwear that can get wet, and a change of clothes.
