Powerboat Instructor & Skipper (Trainee) Overview:

A 23 month contract where you will help maintain our training centre and fleet while you train as a Powerboat Instructor and Skipper. As your powerboat skills and qualifications develop, your responsibilities will begin to include instructing powerboating. By the time you complete your traineeship you be fully qualified to skipper commercial craft up-to 24m and to Instruct on a variety of powered craft, plus you will have considerable experience of instructing at various levels.

Chieftain Training:

Chieftain Training is a marine training centre, accredited by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) to deliver a range of RYA Shorebased and Powerboat Training Courses to both the public and the commercial sector. The centre is also accredited by the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) to deliver a number of STCW training course. If you are serious about entering the marine industry then RYA and STCW certificate are your passport to travel!

The organisation is about to enter a stage of rapid growth and this will be an exciting time to join the team, and be part of that development. The target markets are yacht crew and workboat crew. The Company operates mainly in Southampton (across two venues) with some other UK interests.

Powerboat Instructor & Skipper (Trainee) Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the maintenance of our Southampton training centres and equipment
  • Assist with maintenance of our fleet
  • Assist Instructors as required
  • Conduct monthly safety checks
  • Shadow experienced Instructors and then begin instructing
  • Crew and then skipper powerboats and motorboats

Powerboat Instructor & Skipper (Trainee) Further Responsibilities:

As a small business, all of the staff have to fulfil multiple roles. The post-holder will assume responsibility for other areas (to be agreed based on skills and previous experience).

Powerboat Instructor & Skipper (Trainee) Person Specification:

ESSENTIAL ATTRIBUTES

  1. Minimum age of 18 years
  2. Experience or qualifications to meet at least one of the following:
    1. An advanced level or Instructor Certificate in at least one of the RYA schemes OR
    2. Evidence of a substantial background in power boating OR
    3. Evidence of a substantial background in a water sport OR
    4. A current RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification OR
    5. A Level 3 Award in Education & Training / PTLLS (or equivalent or higher) OR
    6. A professional qualification in boat building OR
    7. Professional experience as a marine or automotive engineer OR
    8. Professional experience in a skilled trade (carpenter, electrician, builder etc) OR
    9. Similar maintenance, building or engineering experience to be discussed with the Principal
  3. Competent swimmer
  4. UK Nationality or the right to work in the UK
  5. Live within a 40 minute commute of our training centres (SO197HS and SO181GN).
  6. Hold an ML5 (or ENG1) medical certificate with no restrictions*.

*Assuming you are in good health you can apply for this position without holding the medical but if we offer you a position we will expect you to complete the medical (at your expense) before you start work. Once you are employed by us we will pay for future medicals.

If you already hold some of the above certificates we may substitute for others.

Year 2

Following the first year, each employee will agree with the Principal their training plan for year 2. It will vary from trainee to trainee, based on performance and on what route the trainee is keen to follow. Year 2 is likely to involve some of the following;

Terms

  • A 5-day working week including some weekends (expect to work up to 22 weekends a year)
  • 28 days annual leave inclusive of public holidays. Compulsory leave period at Christmas
  • A large number of training courses will be provided
  • Option to enter pension scheme

  • Travel insurance is provided if you represent Chieftain Training abroad

  • Year 1 salary £10,000/year (apprentice wage agreed by HMRC)
  • Year 2 salary £13,500-19,000/year (dependant on age and experience)

Break Down Of Time

  • Work/On the job Training 70% of the time
  • Training Courses 20% of the time
  • On leave 10% of the time
  • Being paid 100% of the time

Professional Fees & Expenses

We cover the costs of all of your course fees and your commercial endorsement fee, however  you will have to budget for professional membership and exam fees. The list below is a guide and is not exhaustive, costs are correct at the time of writing (October 2022).

  • RYA Membership £47/ year (£26 if you are under 25) paid in the first quarter of year 1 and then annually
  • RYA Short Range Certificate Exam Fee, £60, paid in the first quarter of year 1
  • RYA Advanced Powerboat Exam Fee, £193, paid mid way through year 1
  • RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Exam Fee, £224, paid in year 2
  • GMDSS LRC or GOC Exam Fee, £160-£180, paid in year 2

We provide a considerable number of course handbooks for you to keep and we loan you a life jacket and waterproofs (for power boating and motor boating). We provide a wetsuit and impact vests for PWC (jet skiing) however you will need;

  • Sailing wellies
  • Wetsuit boots
  • Fleece & thermals
  • Gloves, hat, sunglasses
  • Sailing knife or multitool
  • Additional books
