RYA NAVIGATION INSTRUCTOR COURSE AIMS
The RYA Navigation Instructor course will prepare you to instruct the following RYA Shorebased Navigation courses:
- RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship
- RYA Day Skipper and Watch Leader Shorebased
- RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased

Two days (plus some pre course preperation)
WHAT ARE THE PRE REQUISITES TO BECOME A RYA NAVIGATION INSTRUCTOR?
- Minimum age 18
- RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Certificate. If the course was not completed recently it is important that candidates refresh their knowledge of the whole syllabus.
- RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence OR RYA Advanced Powerboat Instructor
- RYA Teaching in the Classroom (TIC) OR Level 3 Award in Education & Training (or higher level UK Teaching Award or IMO Train the Trainer 6.01
- RYA Membership
- Enthusiasm
- Knowledge well in excess of the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased
COURSE CONTENT
The RYA Navigation Instructor course is classroom-based and comprises training and assessment. There will be discussions surrounding the running of RYA navigation courses, the syllabi, equipment required and resources available. Each candidate will deliver a pre prepared session and carry out several chartwork exercises. You will have plenty opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of IRPCS, chart work, tides, electronic navigation, seamanship, buoyage and passage planning. You will also be teaching some of these subjects as part of your course.

RYA NAVIGATION INSTRUCTOR COURSE RATIO
RYA Shorebased Instructor training takes place with up-to 6 candidates per Trainer. The RYA does not sanction 1:1 Instructor courses.
HOW LONG IS THE RYA NAVIGATION INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATE VALID FOR?
5 years. After 5 years an online Instructor revalidation is required.
