Chieftain Training operates from three main maritime training centres in the UK: our headquarters in Hamble, Southampton Water ActivityCentre (SWAC) in Southampton, and our GMDSS training centre at Rhu Marina in Helensburgh, Scotland. We also deliver selected courses and own-boat tuition at customer venues and onboard vessels throughout the UK and internationally.

Chieftain Training Hamble – STCW, GMDSS, Engineering & RYA Shorebased Training

Chieftain Training’s headquarters is in Hamble-le-Rice, near Southampton, one of the UK’s best-known sailing and maritime centres. Hamble is our principal shorebased and professional maritime training centre and is home to our STCW, GMDSS, RYA navigation, marine engineering, first aid and MCA professional courses.

Southampton Water Activity Centre (SWAC) – RYA Practical, Yachtmaster & Watersports Training

SWAC is Chieftain’s principal practical training centre, with two large slipways, pontoons, changing rooms, classrooms, secure storage and direct access to the River Itchen, SWAC is home to our extensive fleet and is where our practical training takes place. Here we cater for a wide range of professionals, trainee instructors, schools and youth sailors. SWAC offers unrivalled access to Southampton Water and the Solent and has two large slipways and a pontoon accessible at any state of tide. We own multiple moorings in the area.
We also own the widest range of training craft of any RYA centre in Southampton and probably the whole country.

Chieftain Training Scotland – GMDSS Courses in Helensburgh

Based at Rhu Marina in Helensburgh, just west of Glasgow, our Scottish training centre operates in partnership with You & Sea, who provide excellent classroom facilities.

We hold MCA approval to deliver and examine the following GMDSS courses and certifications:

OWN BOAT & OFFSITE TUITION (Global Training – At Sea or On Site)

In addition to our three UK-based training centres, we offer Own Boat Tuition anywhere in the world. Whether you’re preparing for a passage, learning new systems, or training your crew, we’ll tailor the instruction to suit your vessel and experience level. This service is generally intended for existing customers who have started with us in Hamble, Southampton or Helensburgh

We’re also happy to relocate selected courses to your workplace, yacht club, or training venue—ideal for groups looking for flexible, high-quality instruction in a familiar setting.

We are one of only 2 training schools in the world that have MCA approval to run the full range of STCW Medical Care, PMC Update, Medical First Aid and Elementary First Aid Courses offsite (i.e. at your venue) anywhere in the UK..

All RYA practical training is run from Southampton Water Activity Centre (SWAC).

Where are Chieftain’s STCW courses held?

All STCW courses are available at Chieftain Hamble. Select ones are also available from the other two sites

Where are Chieftain’s GMDSS courses held?

There is an MCA approved GMDSS suite at both Hamble and Helensburgh. Both centre run all level of GMDSS every month.

Does Chieftain Training have a centre in Scotland?
