The EPFA (6 hr) course is aimed at parents, families, child care workers, nannies and au pairs however some nannies, au pairs and teachers are required to take the more thorough 12 hour (PFA) course which includes everything within the 6 hr course.
School teachers who additionally hold First Aid responsibilities in the workplace (i.e. may have to provide First Aid to other staff and visitors) may attend a combined course which includes all of the contents of the 12 hr (PFA) and 18 hr (FAW) courses. The resulting certificate(s) are all valid for three years.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) rules state that at least one person on site must have passed the 12 hour qualification in the last three years, however the rules go further to enforce that even during times of staff leave or absence there must be someone qualified on site and that if accompanying children on an outing you must hold this certificate. Clearly early years providers will need to have several staff trained and many providers chose simply to train all staff to this level
Furthermore all newly qualified entrants to the early years workforce who have completed a level 2 and/or level 3 qualification must have either a full PFA (12 hr) or EPFA (6 hr) course certificate within three months of starting work.
