RYA PWC PROFICIENCY OVERVIEW

The RYA PWC Proficiency Course is a one-day practical jet ski training course for both new and experienced personal watercraft riders. Training takes place from our Southampton waterfront centre, with access to the River Itchen, Southampton Water and the Solent.

The course teaches safe PWC handling, high-speed manoeuvring, close-quarters control, launching and recovery, passage planning and emergency procedures. Successful candidates receive the internationally recognised RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency Certificate.

The certificate is commonly requested by PWC hire operators, marinas, harbour authorities and insurers, and is particularly useful if you intend to operate a jet ski abroad or work aboard a superyacht.

RYA PERSONAL WATERCRAFT PROFICIENCY TRAINING PREREQUISITES

• Ability to swim at least 50m
• Previous experience: None required.
• Minimum age 12 (we do not recommend under 16s drive a ski unsupervised)
• Reasonable physical fitness (this course is not suitable if you are pregnant or suffer from back problems. If you’re in doubt, please consult your GP).

What should I wear on the RYA PWC course?

You should bring suitable swimwear, footwear that can get wet and clothing appropriate for the weather. We provide an impact vest. You can bring your own suitable wetsuit or hire one from us for £5 for the day.

Can I take the course on my own PWC?

Yes. We can deliver the RYA PWC Proficiency Course using one of our training PWCs or on your own suitable personal watercraft. If you prefer to use your own ski, it must be seaworthy, fitted with a working kill cord, appropriately insured and arrive fully fuelled.

WHAT QUALIFICATION WILL I RECEIVE?

On successful completion you will receive the RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency Certificate. This demonstrates that you have been trained in the safe handling and operation of a personal watercraft.

The certificate is widely recognised in the UK and is accepted or requested by many harbour authorities, marinas, PWC operators and insurers. It is also widely recognised overseas, making it particularly useful if you intend to hire or operate a PWC abroad.

Can I obtain an ICC for a jet ski?

Holders of the RYA PWC Proficiency Certificate may be able to apply for an International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) with the Personal Watercraft endorsement without further practical training, subject to the RYA’s age, nationality and eligibility requirements.

Do you need a licence to ride a jet ski in the UK?

There is no single UK-wide recreational jet ski driving licence. However, local harbour or launching authorities may impose their own requirements, and some insurers, clubs and PWC operators require evidence of training. The RYA PWC Proficiency Certificate is the UK’s only national recreational personal watercraft qualification.

We can teach the Personal Watercraft Training Course either on our own skis or yours. The course runs several times a month.  If the dates listed below are not convenient, please contact us as we may be able to arrange some dates to suit you, particularly if there is more than one of you.

Our Principal has been involved in RYA PWC training for more than 20 years and has delivered both PWC Proficiency and PWC Instructor training at training centres and aboard yachts around the world. He has personally owned eight different PWCs.
