PUK Paddlesport Leader Course

Paddle UK Paddlesport Leader Course

Lead safe, enjoyable paddlesport journeys on sheltered water

The Paddle UK Paddlesport Leader Award is designed for paddlers who want to lead groups on sheltered water in canoes, kayaks, stand up paddleboards or mixed craft.

This is a practical leadership award for people who already have personal paddling experience and now want to take responsibility for planning and leading safe, enjoyable paddlesport journeys. It is ideal for outdoor centre staff, club volunteers, youth group leaders, school staff, activity instructors and experienced paddlers looking to take the next step.

At Chieftain Training, the course is delivered from Southampton Water Activity Centre, giving candidates access to a useful range of sheltered water, tidal planning considerations, wind-affected areas and realistic group management scenarios.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for paddlers who want to lead groups in sheltered water environments. You may be working with kayaks, canoes, SUPs or a mixed fleet.

It is particularly useful for:

  • Club paddlers who want to lead group trips
  • Outdoor centre staff
  • School, college and youth group staff
  • Watersports instructors
  • Paddleboard, kayak and canoe leaders
  • Volunteers supporting organised paddlesport activity
  • Experienced paddlers looking to formalise their leadership skills

You do not need to be an elite paddler, but you do need to be comfortable in your chosen craft and able to look after yourself while also making decisions for a group.

What can a Paddlesport Leader do?

A Paddlesport Leader is trained and assessed to lead safe, enjoyable journeys in sheltered water environments. This may include wind-affected sheltered water, slow-moving rivers and suitable estuary environments.

The award is designed around real leadership rather than simply demonstrating personal paddling skills. You will develop your judgement, group management, planning, communication, rescue awareness and decision-making.

Leaders may choose to specialise in canoe, kayak, stand up paddleboard or multi-craft leadership.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age 16
  • Paddlesport Safety & Rescue Award
  • First Aid (within last 3 years)
  • Safeguarding Certificate
  • Paddle UK Membership

    • Paddle your chosen craft confidently in sheltered water
    • Control your craft in wind and around other paddlers

    • Take part in basic rescues
    • Understand the sort of environment you want to lead in

Course content

The course is practical and scenario-based. During the training we will look at:

  • Planning safe and enjoyable paddlesport journeys
  • Understanding the sheltered water environment
  • Weather, wind and simple tidal considerations
  • Group management on the water
  • Leadership styles and decision-making
  • Communication with mixed ability groups
  • Managing mixed craft groups
  • Launching, landing and journey planning
  • Equipment choice and safety kit
  • Rescue skills and incident management
  • Looking after inexperienced paddlers
  • Dynamic risk assessment
  • Creating a positive experience for the group

The emphasis is on developing judgement. A good leader does not just know how to paddle; they know when to go, where to go, how to manage the group and when to change the plan.

Training or assessment?

The Paddlesport Leader pathway normally involves training and assessment. Some experienced candidates may already be close to assessment standard, while others may need more development time. The usual route is to book a 2 day  training course with us and discuss with the tutor whether you require additional training or are ready to progress to the 2 day assessment

Where we run the course

Our Paddlesport Leader courses are based at Southampton Water Activity Centre (SWAC).

SWAC gives us an excellent training venue, with access to sheltered water, slipways, pontoons, changing facilities, classrooms, parking and a range of realistic paddling environments close to the centre.

The site is particularly useful for leadership training because it allows us to look at real-world decisions involving wind, tide, group ability, launch sites, traffic on the water and changing conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Is this course only for kayakers?

No. The Paddlesport Leader Award can be used by paddlers working in canoe, kayak, stand up paddleboard or mixed craft environments.

Do I need to be an instructor already?

No. This is a leadership award, not a teaching qualification. It is designed for people who want to lead journeys and manage groups safely on the water.

Is this the same as the Paddlesport Instructor Award?

No. The Paddlesport Instructor Award focuses on delivering introductory sessions and teaching activity. The Paddlesport Leader Award focuses on leading safe, enjoyable journeys in appropriate sheltered water environments.

Can I use this award for work?

Many clubs, centres and organisations use Paddle UK leadership awards to support their activity delivery. You should always check with your employer, operating procedures and insurer to confirm what qualification is required for your role.

Do I need my own boat or board?

You are welcome to bring your own or use one of our craft.

What happens after training?

After training, you will receive feedback and an action plan. Some candidates may be ready for assessment soon afterwards. Others may need to gain more experience, complete specific development tasks or build confidence in particular areas.
