Chieftain Training

Chieftain Training is based in Southampton on the Solent and offers a range of RYA, HSE, MCA, STCW and CIEH safety and navigation training courses for sailors, powerboaters, super-yacht crew, workboat skippers, ocean rowers, divers and seafarers. An additional Centre is based in Dumbarton, Scotland.

RYA – Royal Yachting Association Recognition

The Southampton Training Centre is fully recognised by the RYA to deliver all of their shorebased and powerboat courses, in Navigation, Sea Survival, Safety, First Aid, Marine Radio, Engine Maintenance, Powerboating, and Instructor Training.  The Dumbarton Centre in Scotland offer a range of shorebased courses including RYA First Aid, Radar, Diesel Engine Maintenance and Navigation.

STCW- Standards of Training, Certification & Watch-keeping 2010

Chieftain Training is approved by the MCA to deliver a range of Survival, First Aid and GMDSS (Marine Radio) Courses under the STCW Code. These certificates and the STCW code are used internationally by every developed nation in the world and most developing nations. STCW training is mandatory on most vessel over 24m and some small craft.

MCA- Maritime Coastguard Agency

Chieftain’s range of Deck Officer Courses prepares candidate for MCA Deck Officer Certificates of Competence (for Superyacht, Workboat and Merchant vessels), including Master 200, Master 500, Master 3000, OOW 3000 and Chief Mate.

CIEH- Chartered Institute of Environmental Health

Our Level 2 and Level 3 Food Safety Courses are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).

HSE- Health & Safety Executive

We additionally offer First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid at Work Courses which comply with the HSE and some which are recognised by the outdoor industry.

World Sailing

We regularly run the mandatory World Sailing Offshore Personal Survival & Medical training for offshore yacht race crews competing in Cat 2, 1 and 0 events, such as the Fastnet Race, Middle Sea Race, Round Britain & Ireland, Trans Atlantic, Sydney Hobart, Vendee Globe, Route De Rhum etc.

E-Learning & Online Training

Many of the courses we offer can be taken online or in the classroom. Our E-Learning courses include RYA Essential Navigation, RYA Day Skipper Shorebased , RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased, RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Shorebased, Master 200, RYA PPR, RYA Short Range Certificate (SRC) and RYA Safe & Fun Safeguarding

Shorebased Training Courses, Southampton

Training takes place either at one of our classrooms or we can come to your office or workplace. Our courses range from short one-day training courses to longer eight-day courses. Each course is designed to help you develop skills in specific areas such as VHF Marine Radio, engine maintenance, First Aid, navigation and sea survival. These courses allow you to focus on learning and developing skills while ashore, without the distractions of flapping sails or noisy engines. Many of our students are working towards RYA Yachtmaster Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or RYA Yachtmaster Ocean, while others are embarking on MCA STCW Training for Basic Safety, Deck crew positions or to become an Officer or Master 200, 500 or 3000.

Survival Courses

Our most popular survival course is the RYA Sea Survival, alongside the World Sailing Offshore Survival and World Sailing one-day Offshore Refresher. Growing in popularity every month is our STCW Personal Survival Techniques Course, which is required by super yacht, workboat and cruise ship crew.

RYA & MCA Navigation Courses

These classroom (or online) courses include RYA Essential Navigation, RYA Day Skipper shorebased , RYA Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased, RYA Yachtmaster Ocean shorebased, Master 200, and RYA Radar.

Safety Courses

Aspiring RYA Yachtmaster and Advanced Powerboat Skippers require RYA PPR, while seafarers and super yacht crew require STCW Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (PSSR). Meanwhile new dinghy and windsurf Instructors and many of those working with children require the RYA Safe & Fun Course.

Marine Radio (GMDSS) Training

Anyone using marine VHF is required to be licensed. There are 4 levels of training. The simplest is for inshore and coastal users of small craft (below 24m) and is known as the RYA SRC (Short Range Certificate), the course is one-day or can be taken online. Those operating further afield should take the LRC Long Range Certificate, which is a 4-day course. If you are likely to operate vessels over 24m then you will need either the ROC Restricted Operator Certificate for coastal use for the GOC General Operator Certificate for global use.

First Aid Training Courses

Our most popular First Aid courses are the one day RYA First Aid and the  STCW Elementary First Aid courses. However w offer a wide range of First Aid Courses for the outdoor industry, teachers and the workplace.

Engineering & Boat Maintenance Courses

The extensive range of 8 diesel engines in our classroom guarantee a superb RYA Diesel Course, this is complimented by our home grown Level 2 Diesel MaintenanceOutboard Engine Maintenance CourseYacht Rigging and Splicing Course and our 12 Volt Marine Electrics Course.

Powerboat Training

We offer a range of RYA Powerboat Courses from Powerboat Level 1 to Powerboat Advanced Instructor. The most popular in the Powerboat Level 2 (PB2), however we regularly run Powerboat Tender Operator and Powerboat Advanced Courses for those who require a higher level. We are renowned for our RYA Powerboat Instructor Course which runs roughly once every 8 weeks.

STCW Training

STCW 2010 training courses are required for those working on super yachts and workboats (over 24m) and by most other seafarers, these courses are aimed at larger craft and not generally required in the UK abroad smaller craft (less than 24m).

The STCW Basic Safety Week is 5 days and is made up of 5 shorter courses, you can read full details of these and some of the more advanced STCW courses here.
