Professional Watersports Instructor Fast Track Programme | 3 months
3-month Instructor training programme at SWAC, Southampton
Train to become a professional sailing, windsurfing and paddlesports instructor with Chieftain Training at Southampton Water Activities Centre. Successful candidates emerge qualified to teach 7 separate disciplines.
This is the most comprehensive watersports instructor training programmes available anywhere. Over 3 intensive months, candidates train across sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, canoeing, powerboating, safety, seamanship and instructor development.
The programme is designed for people who want more than a gap-year certificate. It is for students, career changers and aspiring outdoor professionals who want to build a serious foundation for work in the UK or overseas water-sports industry.
By the end of the programme, successful candidates will have developed the practical skills, teaching ability, safety awareness and professional qualifications needed to start work as a multi-discipline water-sports instructor.

Become more employable than a single-discipline Instructor

At Chieftain Training, we train candidates across a broad mix of watersports so they can work in a wider range of centres, resorts, clubs and outdoor education settings.
Successful candidates may complete training and assessment in:
- Dinghy sailing
- Keelboat sailing
- Multihull sailing
- Windsurfing
- Kayaking
- Stand up paddleboarding
- Canoeing
- Powerboating
- Seamanship
- Safety and rescue
- First aid
- Shorebased navigation
- Outdoor leadership and professional conduct
This gives candidates a wider skill base, better employment options and a stronger understanding of how professional watersports centres operate.

Based on Southampton Water, SWAC offers access to sheltered water, tidal conditions, commercial traffic, open-water experience and a wide range of training craft. This gives candidates a far richer learning environment than a small lake or single-discipline centre.

Candidates do not just learn how to pass assessments. They learn how to operate safely, teach effectively and behave professionally in a real centre environment.

What makes this programme different?
Seven teaching disciplines
Candidates work towards instructor status across sailing, windsurfing and paddlesports. This creates instructors who are far more flexible and useful to employers.
Real professional training
This is not just a collection of certificates. Candidates spend 3 months developing as instructors, leaders and watersports professionals.
Sailing, paddling and powerboating in one place
Practical training takes place at SWAC, where candidates can move between dinghies, keelboats, multihulls, windsurf boards, kayaks, canoes, SUPs and powerboats. Shorebased support courses take place at our professional training centre nearby in Hamble
Strong safety foundation
The programme includes first aid, rescue skills, powerboating, safe supervision and practical seamanship. Candidates leave with the safety awareness expected of a professional instructor.
Better preparation for work
Employers want instructors who can teach more than one activity, help with centre operations, support groups, manage risk and work well with customers. This programme is designed around those needs.
What will I be able to do after the course?
Successful candidates should be ready to apply for work at:
- Watersports centres
- Sailing schools
- Activity centres
- Outdoor education centres
- Holiday resorts
- Summer camps
- Yacht clubs
- School and youth programmes
- Adventure travel companies
- UK and overseas seasonal centres
Because the programme covers several disciplines, candidates are not limited to one type of job. A multi-discipline instructor is often more useful to an employer than someone who can only teach one activity.
For parents
Choosing an instructor training programme is a significant investment. This course is designed to give candidates far more than a short-term experience.
The programme helps young adults build:
- Practical employability skills
- Confidence and independence
- Leadership and communication skills
- Safety awareness
- Teamwork
- Professional behaviour
- Recognised watersports qualifications
- A clear route into seasonal or full-time work
Candidates train in a structured environment with experienced instructors and clear expectations. They will be challenged, supported and treated as future professionals.
For many young people, this type of programme can be a powerful bridge between school, university, employment and adult independence.
All graduates who would like to, will receive an interview to work with us. We will also connect other employers with our graduates. Exact introductions will be dictated by your performance and the time of year you graduate.
Course structure
The Professional Watersports Instructor Fast Track Programme runs continuously over 3 months.
Training includes practical sessions afloat, shorebased theory, safety training, teaching practice, personal skill development, instructor preparation and formal assessments.
The course is full-time and candidates should expect a busy timetable. Some days will be physically demanding. Weather, tides and candidate progress may affect the exact weekly running order.
There are three start dates each year.
Optional self-catering accommodation is available nearby in local student halls, approximately five minutes’ walk from SWAC.

However, candidates must arrive with a positive attitude, basic water confidence and the motivation to train intensively.
Is this programme suitable for beginners?
This is not a complete beginner course.
Candidates do not need to be advanced sailors, paddlers and windsurfers before they arrive, but they must have some previous watersports or outdoor experience. The course moves quickly and candidates need enough confidence on the water to progress towards instructor standard.
Applicants who are unsure whether they meet the entry standard should contact Chieftain Training before booking.
