WHO REQUIRES THE HSE FIRST AID AT WORK CERTIFICATE?

This course was written by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to assist employers comply withe the HSE First Aid at Work Act (1981). It is the standard qualification for First Aiders in the UK work place and is nationally recognised. It is also the minimum First Aid qualification for anyone wanting to become either an HSE or RYA endorsed First Aid Instructor.

WHAT ARE THE PRE REQUISITES FOR THE HSE FIRST AID AT WORK COURSE?

Basic physical fitness so that you can perform First Aid on others.

WHAT IS COVERED ON THE HSE FIRST AID AT WORK COURSE?

Written by the HSE, the syllabus includes

  • The role of the first-aider
  • The importance of preventing cross-infection
  • the need for recording incidents and actions
  • use of available equipment
  • assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
  • CPR
  • Use of an AED
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is
    • unconscious (including seizure);
    • choking
    • wounded and bleeding
    • suffering from shock
  • provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters)
  • administer first aid to a casualty with:
    • injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including
    • suspected spinal injuries
    • chest injuries;
    • burns and scalds
    • eye injuries
    • sudden poisoning
    • anaphylactic shock
  • recognise the presence of major illness and provide appropriate first aid (including
    • heart attack
    • stroke
    • epilepsy
    • asthma
    • diabetes

Although not part of the standard HSE syllabus, we also cover

  • drowning
  • secondly drowning
  • cold water shock
  • hypothermia
  • heat stroke
  • heat exhaustion

We can easily tailor this course to your requirements and are often asked to include treatment for children.

The course is assessed on the last day (practical, and oral/written) and the certificate lasts for three years.

HOW LONG DOES A HSE FIRST AID AT WORK CERTIFICATE LAST:

The HSE stares that, “Certificates for the purposes of first aid at work last for three years. Before their certificates expire, first-aiders will need to undertake a re-qualification course, to obtain another three-year certificate. Once certificates have expired the first aider is no longer considered to be competent to act as a workplace first aider.”

The FAW Re-qualification course is only 2 days and can be taken, if your initial certify is soon to expire or has already lapsed.

HSE FIRST AID AT WORK COURSE OPTIONAL EXTRAS:

Commercially endorsed skipper and crew of MCA coded vessel are required to hold a First Aid certificate that is recognised by the MCA. We cover the necessary RYA and STCW content on all our courses so when you book First Aid at Work (FAW) with us there is an option to dual certify and also receive the RYA First Aid Certificate or the STCW Elementary First Aid Certificate.
