Windsurfing

Windsurfing is fast-paced, rewarding and hugely confidence-building. It develops excellent wind awareness, balance and water skills, and is one of the most exciting ways to learn how wind powers movement across the water. Whether you’re stepping onto a board for the first time or aiming to race, our windsurfing courses follow a clear and proven progression.

What is Windsurfing?

Windsurfing combines elements of sailing and board sports. You stand on a board, control a sail attached by a universal joint, and use balance, body position and sail control to move efficiently across the water.

Because you are so close to the water and wind, progress is quick and very tangible:

  • You feel wind shifts immediately

  • Sail trim and stance have instant effect

  • Balance and coordination improve rapidly

  • Confidence grows fast

Skills learned through windsurfing transfer exceptionally well into dinghy sailing, multihulls, keelboats and winging.

The RYA Windsurfing Pathway

Our courses follow the nationally recognised framework set by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). The pathway starts with adult entry-level training, then progresses through structured youth stages and on to racing.

RYA Start Windsurfing

This is the ideal entry point if you’ve never windsurfed before.

You’ll learn:

  • Equipment setup and safety

  • Basic balance and stance

  • Sailing across the wind

  • Turning and returning to shore

By the end of the course, most participants are confidently sailing short distances independently.

Stage 1 focuses on fun, confidence and safe participation.

  • Safe launching and recovery

The emphasis is on enjoyment and building water confidence.

You’ll develop:

  • Better balance and stance

  • Sailing upwind and downwind

  • More confident turns

  • Improved control in varying wind strengths

Sailors begin to understand how to make progress to a destination rather than just moving around.

Stage 3 refines technique and introduces higher-performance skills.

You’ll focus on:

  • Efficient sail handling

  • Consistent upwind sailing

This stage produces confident, capable young windsurfers who can sail independently in a wide range of conditions.
