RYA TEACHING IN THE CLASSROOM (TIC)

The RYA Teaching in the Classroom (TIC) course must be completed before attendance on any of the following Shorebased Instructor courses

HOW LONG IS THE RYA TIC COURSE?

RYA TIC is a one day course with pre work.  Pre course work includes an online module and the preparation of a lesson.

PREREQUISITES TO THE RYA TEACHING IN THE CLASSROOM (TIC) COURSE

  • Minimum age 18
  • RYA Membership
  • One of the Following
    • An RYA practical instructor certificate in any discipline,  or
    • The certificate(s) required to undertake one of the Shorebased Instructor courses listed above or
    • RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence (sail or power)

If you hold one of the following certificates you are exempt from Teaching in the Classroom Course

  • IMO Train the Trainer 6.09
  • RYA Yachtmaster Instructor
  • RYA Dinghy, Keelboat or Multihull Trainer
  • RYA Powerboat, Personal Watercraft, Inland Waterways or Windsurf Trainer
  • Subject-specific RYA Shorebased Instructor
  • A professional teaching qualification such as PGCE or CertEd

RYA TIC Course

RYA TIC COURSE CONTENT

This course comprises of an online pre-learning module which takes one to two hours followed by a one-day classroom session run by our RYA Teaching in the Classroom Trainer.

Candidates will be expected to prepare a lesson in the time between completing the online module and attending the classroom session. These lessons will be delivered during the classroom session with the opportunity to gain feedback from the Trainer.

Lesson subjects will be allocated according to the candidate’s experience or their upcoming subject-specific Instructor Course.

COURSE RATIO

RYA Teaching in the Classroom Training takes place with up-to 6 candidates per Trainer. The RYA does not sanction 1:1 Instructor courses.

HOW LONG IS THE RYA TEACHING IN THE CLASSROOM (TIC) COURSE?

This certificates does not expire but the shorebased instructor courses that it supports have a five year validity.
