RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course in Southampton (SWAC)
View Dates
Learn to drive a powerboat with confidence on tidal waters in the heart of Southampton. The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is the UK’s most recognised powerboat qualification and is often described as the “driving licence for the water.”
Delivered from Southampton Water Activities Centre (SWAC), this is not lake-based training — you will gain real-world experience on Southampton Water and the Solent, preparing you properly for boating in the UK and beyond.
What is RYA Powerboat Level 2?
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 (PB2) is a 2-day practical course designed for beginners and those with limited experience.
You will learn how to safely handle a powerboat in a wide range of conditions, including close quarters manoeuvring, high-speed handling, and man overboard recovery.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Drive a powerboat confidently in daylight conditions
- Understand the basic rules of the road at sea
- Manoeuvre in close quarters and drive at planing speed
- Plan and execute short coastal passages
What You Will Learn
This is a hands-on, mostly practical course focuses on real boating skills:
- Confident boat handling at low and high speeds
- Close quarters manoeuvring in marinas and alongside pontoons
- Man overboard recovery techniques
- Anchoring and coming alongside safely
- Launching and recovering boats from slipways
- Basic navigation and collision regulations
- Understanding tides, wind, and local conditions
Why Train at SWAC, Southampton?
Many Powerboat Level 2 courses in the Uk and overseas are delivered on inland lakes and/or non tidal waters. At SWAC, you train in a real coastal environment, giving you a significant advantage.
What makes us different:
- Direct access to Southampton Water and the Solent
- Training on tidal waters with real traffic and navigation challenges
- Large operating area — not confined to a small lake or river
- Two large slipways and a pontoon usable at all states of tide
- Ideal conditions for building real confidence, not just passing a course
- The widest range of powered craft of any RYA Centre in the UK
- Most powerboat schools own 1 sometimes 2 boats. We own 20, your course can not be cancelled or cut short due to mechanical failings or damage caused by another student
👉 If you plan to boat on the sea, this is the environment you should train in.

Not all Powerboat Level 2 courses are the same.
Training on a lake can limit your experience:
- No tides
- No waves
- No commercial traffic
- Limited navigation challenges
- Limited close quarter handling
- Restricted speed
At SWAC, you train in a busy, tidal, coastal environment, meaning:
- You gain real-world experience
- You build genuine confidence
- You are better prepared for independent boating
- You are like to come across a few waves
