OVERVIEW:
Prior to enrolling on an RYA Keelboat Instructor Course, candidates need to have passed the Pre-Entry Training and Assessment. This is a test of your sailing skills and proves that you are ready to undergo Instructor Training.
KEELBOAT PRE ENTRY COURSE DURATION:
2 Days – mix of Training and Assessment.

RYA KEELBOAT INSTRUCTOR PRE ENTRY PRE REQUISITES:
- Experienced and Competent Dinghy or Keelboat Sailor
- Skill above the level of RYA Keelboat Seamanship
- Minimum age 16 years
- RYA Membership
COURSE CONTENT:
The Trainer will ask you to demonstrate various skills including:
- Sailing efficiently on all points of sail
- Effective tacking and gybing
- Coming alongside a moored RIB
- MOB under sail
- Controlling speed (follow my leader exercise)
- Close quarter handling (tight circles exercise)
You may also be asked to demonstrate other skills from the National Sailing Scheme, such as:
- Picking up a mooring buoy under sail
- Rudderless Sailing
- Backward sailing
- Anchoring
- Reefing Afloat
