Dinghy sailing is the foundation of almost all sailing disciplines. It teaches you how wind, sails and hull work together — with immediate feedback from the boat and the water. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to sharpen your skills, dinghy sailing is the best way to build real confidence afloat.
What is a Dinghy?
A dinghy is a small, lightweight sailing boat, usually sailed by one or two people. Unlike keelboats, dinghies rely on crew weight and balance rather than a heavy keel to stay upright. This makes them incredibly responsive and rewarding to sail.
Because everything happens “in real time”, dinghies are widely regarded as the best learning platform for sailing:
-
You quickly understand wind direction and strength
-
Sail trim changes are immediately obvious
-
Boat handling skills develop fast
-
Confidence builds through hands-on experience
Skills learned in dinghies transfer directly to keelboats, yachts, multihulls and even windsurfing.
The RYA Dinghy Sailing Pathway
