Chieftain Training operates from 4 training centres in the UK. They are in Hamble, Southampton, London and Helensburgh.
All correspondence and bookings are handled through our HQ, Chieftain Training – Hamble. However courses are offered as follows;

Chieftain Training – Hamble
Our company head quarters and our largest training centre is based in the village of Hamble, a wel known yachting hub near Southampton. The Centre is easy to reach by train or car. Hamble is home to our shorebased (classroom) training. The Hamble Training Centre holds recognition with the RYA, MCA and CIEH. We have 5 training rooms (including a GMDSS suite and engineering room), ample private parking and the beach is a 1 minute walk away.
Chieftain Training – Southampton
Our original training centre is now used exclusively for RYA practical courses (and our home grown radar afloat course). 2 minutes walk away is our private marina and boat yard, Mariners Wharf which is home to our fleet. We are one of the few RYA powerboat schools in the country that owns our own private moorings/pontoons, on site workshop and our own private slipway.
Mariners Wharf is on the River Itchen which gives us access to Southampton Water and the Solent. We are the closest RYA Powerboat, PWC and Motor Cruising Center to Southampton Airport.
Chieftain Training – SWAC, Southampton
On 1 Jaunty 2026, we took over Southampton Water Activities Centre (SWAC). Over the next few weeks our Southampton Centre at Mariners Wharf (above) will relocate to the SWAC site, which is nearby but offers better access to Southampton Water and the Solent..
Chieftain Training – London
New for 2025. Many of our RYA shorebased courses are now available at our new LondonTrainng Centre, located at the highly respected Ahoy Centre in Greenwich. The first class venue is a well established sailing and rowing charity. The classroom we use is on their top floor and provides a spacious training area where our Instructors and equipment will ensure you have a fantastic course. Sailors and navigators from around the globe will all recognise the importance of Greenwich, and the Prime Meridian. Our London centres is recognised by the RYA for all of their shorebased courses and also offers HSE and IMO courses.
Chieftain Training – Scotland
Based at Rhu Marina in Helensburgh, just west of Glasgow, our Scottish training centre operates in partnership with You & Sea, who provide excellent classroom facilities.
We hold MCA approval to deliver and examine the following GMDSS courses and certifications:
- STCW GMDSS General Operator Certificate (GOC)
- STCW GMDSS Restricted Operator Certificate (ROC)
- MCA GMDSS Long Range Certificate (LRC)
- MCA GMDSS Satellite Communications Endorsement
This location offers convenient access for learners across Scotland and Northern England seeking high-quality, approved maritime radio training.

In addition to our four UK-based training centres, we offer Own Boat Tuition anywhere in the world. Whether you’re preparing for a passage, learning new systems, or training your crew, we’ll tailor the instruction to suit your vessel and experience level.
We’re also happy to relocate selected courses to your workplace, yacht club, or training venue—ideal for groups looking for flexible, high-quality instruction in a familiar setting.
We are one of only 2 training schools that have MCA approval to run the full range of STCW Medical Care, PMC Update, Medical First Aid and Elementary First Aid Courses offsite (i.e. at your venue).
