The Medical Care Update Course is for anyone who has previously held a STCW Proficiency in Medical Care Certificate which has now expired or is soon to expire (5 year validity)

WHAT ARE THE PRE REQUISITES FOR STCW PROFICIENCY IN MEDICAL CARE UPDATE?
- STCW Proficiency in Medical Care (or update) issued under the Authority of the MCA an EU
administration, Canada, South Africa or New Zealand. - Minimum age 16
COURSE CONDITIONS
MCA course approval for this course is held by Haven Ambulance. We co own Haven Ambulance. Courses are also available at your venue on demand and our instructors and assessors are willing and MCA approved to travel anywhere within the UK.
WHAT IS COVERED ON STCW PROFICIENCY IN MEDICAL CARE UPDATE?
The course ensures you are still competent to carry out Medical Care on board a vessel. It effectively refreshes both the Medical First Aid and the Medical Care courses at once. Sessions include;
- Obtaining TMAS
- Casualty – Primary and secondary survey
- Advanced life support with use of oxygen and AED
- Signs and symptoms and frst aid of trauma and medical problems
- Patient Treatment inc Observations
- Medications, Injections, IV fluids and Suturing
- Catheterisation
- Infectious diseases
- Childbirth
- Log keeping – Medical report scenarios and treatment
- Care of the dying
- Informing Port Authorities
- Casualty handling and evacuation
- Use of St Johns First Aid Manual and MFAG
- Use of the Ship Captains Medical Guide
- Use of MSN1905 Ship’s Medical Stores (specific Cat A)
The Medical Care Update course centres heavily on MSN1905 and the Ships Captains Medical Guide, you will be set several scenarios which will require you to consult these two publications. There will also be plenty of practical excercsies to practice/refresh.
On the final day an external assessor will attend and take you through the written and practical assessment. before then your Instructor will ensure you have refreshed all of the necessary detail.
