These Joining Instructions apply to the following courses;
- RYA Start Motor Cruising (2 day)
- RYA Helmsman’s (2 day)
- RYA Day Skipper Power (4 day)
- RYA Coastal Skipper Power (5 day)
- Motorboat Skills & Drills (2, 4 or 5 day)
- RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Power Exam Prep (5 day)
- RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Power Exam Prep (5 day)
- Radar Level 2 (1 day)
WHERE
Courses are run from Mariners Wharf. Please meet at our classroom; Chieftain House, 11 Harcourt Rd, Bitterne Park Southampton, SO181GB and NOT at our other training centre/HQ in Hamble
TIMINGS
- All courses meet at 0915 on the first morning.
- Most multi day courses finish at 1800, the final day finishes at 1600.
- Radar Level 2 finishes at 1615
- Days which include a night excercise finish later (1 on Day Skipper, 2 on Coastal Skipper, Up to 3 on Yachtmaster)
- Yachtmaster finish times vary and can run into the last evening.
PRE REQUISITES
Some of our courses have pre requisites, these are not optional, they are requirements. If you are unsure what they are please check back against the relevant product page/course description using the links above.
PRE COURSE PREPERATION
- Radar Level 2 – Complete the RYA Radar Course
- Start Motor Cruising, RYA Helmsman’s & Skills & Drills – None
- RYA Day Skipper Power- Complete the Day Skipper Shorebased Course
- RYA Coastal Skipper Power- Complete the RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Course and refresh night lights.
- RYA Yachtmaster Coastal & Offshore
- Ensure you have logged the relevant qualifying passages and seatime
- Complete the Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased, SRC and First Aid Courses
- Ensure your radar and diesel knowledge is at least the level of RYA Radar and RYA Diesel
- Refresh Day Shapes, Sound Signals, Night Lights and a working knowledge of the IRPCS.
CERTIFICATION
Certification for most courses is issued at the discretion of your Instructor and the Principal. The certificate is usually issued at the end of the course before you leave. Yachtmaster Exams are certified by RYA HQ, and therefore posted to you after your course/exam. All of our courses require 100% attendance.
MEALS
Tea and Coffee are included on board for all courses.
For radar Level 2 please bring a packed lunch.
Lunch is provided for all other Motorboat courses. For 4 day courses 1 evening meal is include (for the night exercise). For Coastal Skipper courses 2 evening meals are included (for the two night excdrcsies). For Yachtmaster Prep courses uptp 3 evening exams are included.
SAFETY
For all practical courses, adults are provided with a 160N lifejacket. Children are provide with an appropriately sized lifejacket. If you would prefer to wear your own life jacket then you may do so. It must be of a minimum 150N, be well fitting and have been looked after, as per the manufacturers recommendations. For courses involving a night exercise it must be fitted with a light and reflective material.
WHAT TO BRING
- Passport photo of yourself for your certificate (not for Helmsman’s or Radar L2)
- Note pad and pen
- Small torch (not for Radar L2)
- Warm clothing and a change of clothes
- Cap/hat/gloves/sunglasses/suncream as appropraite
- Soft soled footwear that can get wet
- Wet weather gear (or hire ours for £5/day)
- RYA G158 Logbook (if you would like you miles logged)
You kit should be packed within a small soft day bag. Space is at a premium onboard so if you bring a suitcase or additional luggage it will have to be left (at your risk) ashore.
RYA Coastal Skipper Power Course
- Everything in the “What To Bring” list (above)
- Sleeping bag, wash kit, towel and chages of clothes.
RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore Exam Prep
- Everything in the “What To Bring” List,” above
- Completed Exam Application Form
- First Aid and SRC certificates
- Commercial Endorsement paperwork (if it is ready)
ACCOMADATION
Accommodation is not provided on board (except for 4 nights of the 5 day Coastal Skipper Course and some mile builders). For all other courses we suggest you book accommodation near to SO18 1GN.
UNDER 18s
The minimum age for Day Skipper Power is 16. The minimum age for our Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Power courses is 18. Under 16s must be accompanied by at adult who is also booked onto the course. Parents or guardians of students aged under 18 must fill in and sign a medical declaration for their child prior to the course starting.
CANCELLATION & INSURANCE
Cancellation and postponement terms were agreed at the time of booking and are listed at Chieftain Training Ts & Cs. We urge you take out appropriate insurance in case you are unable to attend you course for any reason.
For Yachtmaster courses if we have only sold one place we will shorten your prep by a day and you will benefit from 1:1 tuition for three days. This will also bring forward and shorten your exam.
