Senior Powerboat Instructor

RYA CHIEF POWERBOAT INSTRUCTOR

Job Title: Senior Powerboat Instructor

Reporting to: RYA Principal and the STCW Principal (2 line managers)

Commencement Date: ASAP

Overview:

We are looking for an experienced Advanced Powerboat Instructor or better still a Powerboat Trainer to become our Senior Powerboat Instructor. You will fulfil two roles.

  1. RYA Chief Powerboat Instructor, who will ensure the effective delivery of the organisation’s RYA training, in particular powerboat training. The centre is not currently recognised for RYA powerboat training but the RYA Principal has some experience in this area and she is confident that we have the necessary boats and resource to gain accreditation in a timely manor.
  2. Instructor for other courses (RYA shorebased and STCW).

The post holder will be required to manage freelance Instructors and in the fullness of time a small team of permanent staff. The post holders will deliver courses, handle technical customer enquiries, assist in the ongoing development of the company and oversee the coding and maintenance of a small fleet (currently 2 boats, this may increase).

We envisage the Senior Powerboat Instructor devoting much of the first month to preparing for RYA recognition and much of the second month cementing policies into place. Moving forward we anticipate the post holder instructing about 50% of the time (mixture of RYA powerboat and RYA/STCW shorebased courses), while performing other duties (maintenance, admin and management functions) during the remaining 50% of the time. These % may vary depending on the exact skillset of the successful applicant.

As the business develops there will be an opportunity to start delivering a variety of STCW courses at the nearby Woolston Center and any background in this area will be useful. Experience in delivering RYA shorebased training is essential.

Chieftain Training:

The organisiation currently offers a range of Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Shorebased Training Courses to both the public and the commercial sector. Secondary products are STCW, CIEH and HSE courses. The organisation has two training centres in Southampton, about 2 miles apart. One of them has water access and there is an opportunity to set up and develop a powerboat training centre. The target markets are sailors and power boaters of all sized craft, but in particular commercial operators and super yacht crew. Chieftain Training operates mainly in Southampton (across the two venues) with some other interests. The company owns two craft (a 7.2m RIB and a 4m tiller steered Rigiflex) and is in a position to increase the size of the fleet when ready.

We own our own pontoon (moorings) on the River Itchen and have our own haul-out facilities on site. The MD is a Powerboat and PWC Trainer. While he will support you he is our STCW Principal and his focus is on the development of MCA/STCW training. You will report to the RYA Principal and you will have a high degree of authority concerning powerboat training and coding matters.

For clarity, the center is not currently recognised for RYA practical courses but is ready to seek RYA Powerboat recognition.

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Mange the delivery of powerboat training and deliver a considerable % of courses
  • Take overall responsibility for the coding/licensing of relevant vessel
  • Take overall responsibility for fleet maintenance

  • Manage and develop junior staff and deliver staff training
  • Assist with marketing, sales and boat shows as required
  • Deliver other training (STCW, HSE, CIEH, Education & Training), if you have a relevant background

Further Responsibilities:

As a small business, all of the staff have to fulfil multiple roles. The post-holder will assume responsibility for other areas (to be agreed, based on skills and previous experience).
