OVERVIEW:

The art of sail trim is often thought of as a dark art. Why does a small amount of tension on a particular sail control make such a difference and what are the signs you are looking for when you look up at your race sails.

COURSE DURATION:

2.5 – 3 hours including a 15 minute break

PRE REQUISITES:

You should be familiar with yacht, day boat or dinghy racing.

  • Rig Types and sail material
  • Draft, camber and the slot
  • The search for power
  • Controlling power in stronger winds
  • Tell tails
  • Jib luff tension, sheet tension and car position/sheet angle
  • Mainsail luff, leach and foot tension
  • Mainsheet, kicker and traveller relationship
  • The backstay (yachts and keel boats only)
  • Question Time
