OOW Yachts General Ship’s Knowledge (GSK)

GENERAL SHIP’S KNOWLEDGE OVERVIEW:

Time away from your vessel to take training courses is costly, not just in lost days/income but in hotels, meals and expenses. The GSK module is normally a 5-day course at a maritime college but with this Blended Learning, E-Learning solution you can complete the learning in your own time, take the mock exam at home (or onboard your vessel) and then simply attend the actual written exam.

GENERAL SHIP’S KNOWLEDGE COURSE DURATION:

  • You will have 12 months access to the course and it normally takes about 40 hours to complete
  • The final exam (Glasgow) has a 2.5 hour time limit

GENERAL SHIP’S KNOWLEDGE PRE REQUISITES:

GENERAL SHIP’S KNOWLEDGE COURSE CONDITIONS:

This course is provide by a partner school who hold the MCA accreditation. The final exam has to be completed at City Of Glasgow College (Scotland).

Having passed this course you will have 3 years to progress to your OOW (Yachts) Oral exam, for that reason this is often one of the first modules that potential OOW candidates complete.

GENERAL SHIP’S KNOWLEDGE COURSE CONTENT:

The course is divided into four sections and 20 topics;

  • Ship Construction
    • Ship construction terminology
    • Longitudinal, transverse and local stresses due to static and dynamic loading
    • Methods of yacht construction
    • Plans normally carried on board
    • The cause and prevention of oxidisation and chemical and galvanic corrosion
    • The functions of classification societies
    • Load lines, reserve buoyancy and methods of damage control
    • Bilge-pumping
  • Stability
    • Basic principles of hydrostatics and related terms
    • Basic principles of initial stability
  • Meteorology
    • Global wind distribution
    • The causes of local winds
    • The effects of water vapour in the atmosphere
    • The practical use and care of common meteorological instruments.
    • Frontal depressions
    • Sources of weather information available to ships
  • Seamanship
    • Responsibilities of the officer of the watch in relation to boarding a pilot
    • Precautions to be taken in preparing a vessel for sea
    • The SOLAS and MARPOL Regulations
    • The provisions of the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers (CoSWP)
  • Assessment
    • A mock assessment is included within the course with feedback from your tutor
    • Following the course you will need to attend the City of Glasgow College to complete the 2.5 hour written exam. The pass mark will be 60%.
