Job Title: Chief STCW Instructor

Reporting to: Principal

Commencement Date: Early 2021

Overview:

To co-lead the initial approval process of STCW & MCA short courses and then manage the effective delivery of the company’s STCW training. The post holder will manage a small team of full time and freelance Instructors, oversee the maintenance of teaching resources (for safety and engineering courses), handle technical customer enquiries and assist the Quality Assurance Manger with the ongoing accreditation of these courses. The CI will teach some courses.

Chieftain Training:

Chieftain Training is a small training centre, recognised by the Royal Yachting Association to deliver a range of RYA Shorebased Training Courses to both the public and the commercial sector. STCW training is currently outsourced to a third party who does a perfectly good job. It is however our intention to bring the STCW product lines in house. The centre will be seeking accreditation for a range of safety and engineering courses.

The organisation is about to enter a stage of rapid growth and this will be an exciting time to join the team, to help develop new courses and then ensure those courses are delivered correctly. The target markets are yacht crew and seafarers. The Company operates mainly in Southampton (across two venues) with some other UK interests.

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Brief and train new and existing Instructors to meet the operational needs of the company
  • Manage the centre’s Safety policies and update operational procedures in response to feedback, accident reporting and changing legislation
  • Ensure relevant checks, processes and paperwork are maintained to meet external and internal accreditation standards
  • Develop programmes that clearly outline the course requirements, rationale, goals, and objectives
  • Run morning and weekly meetings as required for other Instructors
  • Oversee the operational side of the Southampton Centre
  • Manage site and fleet maintenance
  • Deputise in the Principal’s absence
  • Deliver various training courses and staff training
  • Assist with marketing, sales and boat shows as required
  • Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of your subjects
  • Responsible for covering Instructors during sickness, leave, etc.
  • Review course plans, handouts and training materials
  • Create a learning environment that encourages student involvement and participation

Further Responsibilities:

As a small business, all of the staff have to fulfil multiple roles. The post-holder will assume responsibility for other areas (to be agreed based on skills and previous experience).

  • A 5-day working week including approximately one weekend a month (time given of in lieu)
  • 28 days annual leave inclusive of public holidays. Compulsory leave period at Christmas
